A rare and unusual Japanese Buddhist altar frontal. I have not seen any other extant examples of such an antique textile: this example consists basically of a layout of seven adjacent triangular uchishiki that are embroidered on the same hand-spun and woven linen backing. Silk floss embroidery, couching, and standard embroidery. Fair condition: the three most central uchishiki sections are in good condition, while the others on either side - about half of the textile - have severe condition problems, mainly due to extreme wear (including wear holes) and many loose threads. 86" x 20"
